Track & Field Competition is back!

The various Track and Field leagues have now confirmed dates and venues for the 2021 T&F season!  These are listed, together with championship event details, on the provisional 2021 Track and Field fixture list. The earlier events will be held within the England Athletics Covid secure guidelines for competitions (EA competition guidance).

For this season the Cheshire League Round 1 will be for U11 and U13 age groups only, and Round 2 for U15 and U17 age groups only.  Round 3 and 4 will be for all age groups. As for all events, things may change as guidance is updated, but in the meantime, please note the dates in your diary, keep training, and look out for further details from your age group team managers.

Best wishes

Senior Track Pass (trial system)

We have decided to trial a system which allows senior members to purchase short-term track passes. The options will be £50 for an annual pass (as at present) or £20 for a 3-month pass. There would be no limit on the number of 3-month passes you can purchase.

The purchase process is simple:

Pay for a £50 pass as part of the annual membership fee

or

Pay the £31 membership fee, then pay for annual or 3-month track pass(es) as separate BACS payment(s) to the club. These payments can be made at any time and should include ‘TRACK + SURNAME’ in the reference.

Inform me by email if you are paying for a track pass separately to the membership fee.

I will maintain a list of who has a valid pass, which will be passed to Steve and Sue.

If anyone who has already paid for an annual pass wishes to switch to 3-month passes they should contact the treasurer ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ).

In addition, the Track section offers free one-month trial periods.

Whilst we are still restricted on numbers by Covid rules, the track section runs a booking process via a 'closed' Facebook group: Macclesfield Harriers' Senior Track Training

Track and Race - a Covid-hit season

It goes without saying that due to the situation we found ourselves in in March of this year, the prospect of any Track and Field season seemed highly unlikely. With all club track training cancelled for the best part of 3 months, all the hard work that our athletes had put in over the winter months appeared to be in vain, despite the best efforts of the coaches to keep them motivated and encouraging them to maintain, as best they could, their fitness levels throughout lockdown. Coming back to training following our enforced sabbatical presented its own new challenges. Observing social distancing and all the other guidance provided by England Athletics has created obstacles that needed to be well managed and as a club I think we have done an incredible job to provide, albeit a reduced schedule of training to allow crucially, the younger age groups to get back some sense of normality.

Competition has been almost non-existent. Primarily we have had only the BMC and Trafford Open meetings to provide the much needed opportunity to compete and these have proved invaluable in allowing our athletes to record some great results despite all the difficulties that 2020 has thrown at us.

Way back in July, Finley Proffitt was first back into competition, setting some blisteringly fast times in the 800m (1.56.40), going sub 4 minutes in the 1500m (3.55.85) and an 8.40.08 3000m time in early September. His time in the 1500m broke a longstanding club record from 1988. Other middle distance runners to make the most of the limited competitions were Philip Goodfellow, PB in 800m, Dylan McGrath, PBs in both 800m and 1500m and Aadi Whitlock also setting a PB in the 800m.

In the sprints races, we saw 100m PBs for Sam Danson, Thomas Danson, Tom Willshaw, Callum Wain and Tom Farrall and an equally impressive number of PBs in the 200m, 300m and 400m from Tom Willshaw, Jack Farrall and Callum Wain.  Callum Wain’s 300m time of 37.61 set a new club record, breaking the mark that he set last year.

In the field events, we again had some very strong performances from the Danson brothers with Sam setting a new PB of 6.76m in the long jump, another result that once more broke a very longstanding club record dating all the way back to 1981. He later equalled this distance on a return visit to Trafford.

Two athletes who have turned out very regularly have been Callum Wain and Hayden Blunn.  Both lads have been honing their skills as multi-event athletes. Hayden has had a very successful season culminating in an excellent performance in the Hexham Pentathlon, finishing 4th with a score of 2295 points, Callum followed suit with his first attempt at a pentathlon in early October, finishing with a Power of 10 UK top 5 ranking as a reward for his efforts.

These competitions have proved that although the situation we find ourselves in is less than ideal, with the dedication that these athletes have invested in their training it has still been possible to improve. Sadly, as Greater Manchester moves into Tier 3 the remaining Trafford opens are no longer available to Macclesfield Harriers.

It is very unlikely there will be any opportunity for an indoor winter season so lets hope that 2021 provides us once again with the chance to compete.

T&F training restarts Wed 2nd December 2020

We are pleased to say that Track and Field training will resume at the Athletics Track next Wednesday 2nd December 2020, in line with recent government announcements which permit outdoor organised sport.

Training will continue in the same groups as before the recent lockdown and only fully paid up members (both membership and track fees) who have been booked in advance by coaches to specific time slots will be allowed on the track.

We would like to remind everyone attending to continue to adhere to the T&F Covid Secure rules, including: maintain social distancing, groups of no more than 10, do not attend training if you have symptoms, have tested positive, have been told to self-isolate or have recently returned from a restricted travel area or you live in a tier 3 area. Given the current situation it is very important we keep each other safe by following the rules.

Welcome back!

Note: Information about road, trail & fell group runs will be communicated by the relevant section leads
