Teggs Nose Fell Race

I had a chat with one of the landowners who kindly lets us use their land for the Teggs Race and has done for many years.

He has been very supportive of it, but is a bit hacked off at having to ask a runner to leave his land this week, as they were trespassing and had a map of the race in their hand. He has no problem with supporting the race, but that's for the day....not all year round.

The farmers do not have to allow the race to take place . They are running their businesses and quite legitimately don't want their stock disturbed.

Please respect the fact that the bulk of the route is private land, and without the goodwill of the landowners, the race will not be taking place.

Cheers, Simon

and here's our race organiser's report...

Tegg’s Nose Fell Race – Saturday 11 August 2012

Whether it was the weather; the fact it didn’t clash with Borrowdale for once, or Olympic euphoria, we were taken by surprise by a record entry this year, with 145 runners turning up to complete this testing course around the beautiful Tegg’s Nose. The ground was pretty well baked, suggesting a few fast times, but Simon Bailey’s record remains intact.

The lead changed a few times between Jack Ross, Simon Harding and Calder Valley’s Jason Williams, but Jack took the win by 40 seconds in a time of 55.07. Macc’s Simon Harding was 40 seconds later and Tegg’s Nose regular Malcolm Fowler was third  (1st V40).

Dark Peak’s Judith Jepson was first lady in 66.20, and Staffs Moorlands took the team prize. Despite the heat (and it was HOT), there were only two retirements (a calf strain and a turned ankle).

A healthy cheque for East Cheshire Hospice completed the latest successful running of the race, now in it’s 30th year.

Thanks to all those who marshalled and helped out; to the landowners for their ongoing support and all those who took part; hope you’re inspired to come again next year. .

TEGG’S NOSE FELL RACE 6th AUGUST 2011

Responding to an appeal from then Macc Harriers Chairman Craig Harwood, myself and Dave Walker thought we ought to have a go at organising this race. It is almost literally on my doorstep and nobody wanted to see this tough BM race slip off the calendar.

The morning started with torrential rain; heavy enough to chill the bones of those with plans but equally, too heavy to last for more than an hour, and so it proved, with the start of the race greeted by overcast skies and a gentle breeze but no rain throughout. In fact, almost perfect conditions to run in. The fact that much of the route is on private land in a beautiful area means that there is some great terrain (and descents) only available for the race.

At the start, it was apparent that Simon Bailey was busy elsewhere but a turnout of 89 was promising with plenty of familiar faces.

Reportedly, both Charnwood's Jason Williams, and previous winner Malcolm Fowler was flying on the way out, as was Olivia Walwyn-Bush. Whilst I had not heard the name Jack Ross before, I think we will be doing in the future. He passed Jason on the return, winning by a margin of nearly 2 minutes, to come within a second of Simon’s record in a time of 53.07. Maybe next year a head-to-head race will bring the record down… now that’ll be a battle.

More impressive still was Olivia’s run, knocking over 2 minutes off her own record to finish in 57.11 and 5th place overall, well ahead of the next lady, Macc’s Mandy Calvert in a field including 11 ladies. Congleton’s James Wood was 3rd and Olivia’s husband Tom was 4th , both under 57 minutes.

As a novice organiser, my worries about injuries were unfounded this time. The only retirement was a Pete Abraham with a strained hamstring and even he finished with a smile on his face!

Thank you to the Macc stalwarts who took up familiar marshalling positions; this is a very much a team effort. Thanks to everyone else involved, including the Sheepdog Trial Association; sponsors Campfour; Wincle Brewery and the landowners for their on-going support. Hopefully, next year will see Simon Bailey and Jack Ross out on the same day.

And the results are here !!!!
