Bridge 44, Bullocks lane
Bridge 44
Road bridge over canal. 1831. William Crosley, engineer. Roughly coursed and squared Kerridge stone, laid in smaller blocks over string course. Skew bridge with elliptical arch with voussoirs and keystones, string course and parapet with terminal piers.
A voussoir /vuˈswɑːr/ is a wedge-shaped stone, used in building an arch or vault. Although each unit in an arch or vault is a voussoir, two units are of distinct functional importance: the keystone and the springer. The keystone is the center stone or masonry unit at the apex of an arch.
Now you know! We can inspect the voussoirs before and after the run.
