Goyt Valley Challenge 9th October

Postby Hazel » Sat Aug 27, 2016 5:51 pm

This is a great LDWA event, 24.5 miles or 13.3 miles. The longer route has 4000' ascent. From Buxton it heads up Solomons Temple then goes into the Goyt Valley via Axe Edge, Shining Tor, Kettleshulme, Taxal Moor, Fernilee and return to Buxton. A great day out which includes refreshment stops and I think a meal at the end for only £12.00

Did this last year and thoroughly recommend it - only the LDWA does events that give so much for so little :)

I can echo the above praise for this event, it is a superb day out with faultless organisation by the South Manchester group. If your worried about navigation, don't there are lots of people out on the event and you are given a set of Wainwright maps to navigate by.

We (Macc Harriers) have been asked if we can help with marshalling for the event.

The first checkpoint, somewhere near Axe Edge, should be finished by 11am.

Last year I recall four or five folk volunteered for the task, very much appreciated by the organiser: if you're not taking part and could help out perhaps you could contact the organiser
David Gosling dwg@davidgosling.net direct, thanks !

I was thinking of having a go this year. Enjoyed eating some of the "leftovers" at our CP last year.

Well done on your 1st V50 at Bradbourne on sunday Julian.

Ill be manning checkpoint 1 just below axe edge in my rattly van from just after 8 till 10.30, then bimbling round the route after. A couple more volunteers would be good, no experience necessary and there's tea and cake in it for you.

Julian

I will give you a hand and then "unofficially" run remainder of the short route, as I have things to do later on and do not have time for the whole 9 yards. Think I wlll park up in the checkpoint lay by and divert back there from Burbage.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at this year's moved (and improved?) CP1 tomorrow! You'll have to be quick if you don't want to miss the flapjack.

Many thanks to all who helped out,
Nancy
Dave B
Barry
Trev
Fred (chapeau for cycling up)
Colin
Rosie
Dave
And a couple from Buxton MRT
although there were 'plenty' of us it was just at well, as the whole field seemed to turn up at the same time...
any way not sure who had it, but all Nancys flapjack, and the cake went,
and they said we cane come again.
Much more popular this year, could be sold out early in the future !

Hope those who trundled round had a jolly traipse! On a fine day for a mooch round the Goyt.
All 199 made it safely back by 6pm, and I was back at my rattly van by 7.

What a great day for it!

Thanks for the cup of tea Julian although I didn't actually do much to deserve it other than offer words of encouragement to a few people who were already looking a bit distressed. Went for a short walk on the wild side after and it was brought home to me how unfit I've become - the only way is up.

Thanks to all on duty on Sunday. It was good to see so many familiar faces, all devoted to the task of feeding the hordes. A grand display of goodies too though I did not dally. It's amazing how the competitive mode never really leaves you even when the years accumulate and the old advice of never stopping at checkpoints still seems to be ingrained in my approach to events. So it was a case of picking up and walking on. A gorgeous day altogether

Just like to add my thanks to everyone, I had no idea until I read Julian's post how many people were there helping. I wasn't wearing my glasses so unless someone said "Hello Hazel" I didn't see them!!!! Unfortunately I didn't sample any of Nancy's flapjack as I wasn't feeling hungry at that stage. It was a brilliant day out, perfect weather, stunning scenery and a great route.
