Hi all ...did you go anywhere near Sponds Hill on your Sunday run?

I was leading a group of runners from D group on the Gritstone Trail (we did it over 2 days, Sat/Sun) and we came over Sponds towards Bow Stones about 11.00 on Sunday and came across an enormous dirt bike event. There were a couple of hundred cars up there and hundreds of dirt bikes. They were on all the land around Bakestonedale, Sponds and down towards Kettleshulme (and also on the east side of the Macc-Whaley Road. The ground has been well churned up and there were no marshals at the points where the bikes crossed the footpaths and bridleways. I am trying to find out who organised it so I can mention this safety issue. Does anybody have any idea?

Thanks, Neil

We too met this "event". The track was a mud bath and well chewed up. The comment was made that this was not an attractive part of the Peak District, exasperated by the huge pile of re-cycled paper there as well!

No idea about the org. of the event though.

As l drove homeback towards Kettleshulme was horrified to see extent of damage on hillsides. Hopefully it will recover quickly. Neil, I would advise that you contact National Park Office in Bakewell in first instance. I am sure they will be aware of event and land ownership

I have logged a call with the Peak Park Office and a ranger will be in touch. Despite a lot of searching on the web I cannot find any reference to the event!

Neil

You might want to check if this was the Manchester 17 "Brinks" event, which I on its website was on Sunday 21st. The hillside on the edge of sponds is often a venue for the club's events.
