The full 101 wasn't to be for me as I got badly dehydrated and couldn't eat. 30km in on top of the highest point I had a decision to make and I was at that point feeling quite ill. I decided to try to get the most of the day by slowing down, drinking my body weight in bouillon and enjoying the scenery. Besides I had another 25km to go before there was a suitable place to quit. By the time I got to the halfway point I felt a bit better but knew that I didn't have another 3km ascent in me. I was able to transfer to the 51 and therefore finish and get a medal, albeit not the one I was after. I had a strong finish 12hrs in with my daughter on my shoulders; a sweetener as she would have been in bed had I finished the full Monty.
The results don't include a time for me I don't think as I ran 62km and a slightly different route to the 51, but at least it is not quite DNF! I am unsurprisingly disappointed but as my original motivation was to run in the Alps it is not all bad. I am now conspiring in how I can make up for it. The Skyrunning Lake District event perhaps?!
It was great seeing so many Harriers out in Switzerland, as well as Larry and Jo (even though Larry insisted on weary his Pennine top in his race). There were relatively few Brits in the race so we had a great turnout (better than some of he club champs races?). More Alpine trails please!
Ps. I am proud to say that Daisy Whittington aged 4 (not yet a member) came 6th in her race against a predominantly local field, in what was a surprisingly hilly course given the age group. She has barely taken off her Eiger Ultra Tshirt since, and is looking forward to wearing it next time she does a kids race in the UK!
