9.30 Hathersage. GR 229 815

A 2 hour (or more) run around this scenic area under the guidance of Hazel who has planned us a cunning route to make the most of traveling a bit further.

Stanage

Meet and park at the top of the high street where it exits the village. Or meet at Tucker's 8.40 to car share / directions. A good chance to gear fondle as well in the many outdoor shops.

Tea and cakes afterwards in one of the village cafes.

Hathersage is one of the more interesting villages in the area, with historical associations to Robin Hood and the Eyre family. The village centres around a road junction above the River Derwent, where the road to Sheffield branches off the route which follows the Derwent downstream. The ancient centre of the village was just above the church, which itself stands above and to the north of the modern village centre. On a knoll next to it there is an earthwork called Camp Green, which is probably Danish in origin.

Bole Hill Quarry, Grindleford. How on earth could I have forgotten that the stone was quarried here in the early 1900's for the building of the Derwent and Howden dams, as well as for mill stones etc!!!! For those of you who would like to learn a bit more, there is an excellent web site http://places.wishfulthinking,org.uk/DB ... illAJ.html which talks about the quarry, what the stone was used for, how it was moved etc. etc. The stonework we stood by at the top of the incline used to house the winding drum and there is a picture of this on the web site. It really is worth a read.

Oh blast, for some reason when I posted the web site it hasn't shown it in its entirety so, google Bole Hill Quarry, Grindleford and you will see the web site "wishful thinking"

Fascinating! We must have joined the incline half way up. Steeped in history. Thanks for the jaunt today.
