Barry I'm planning to run and looking for a lift. How about outside The Old Ship on Beech Lane. See you tonight if you're out.

Cheers

Yes, good fun and there was an old champion there who is even more famous than Barry, and even older. For the first time Geoff presented an M70 prize and it went to Jeff Norman of Altrincham AC. He was FRA champion in 1974 and won a string of victories and broke several records around that time. Although a fell runner he was an excellent road runner. He won the AAA marathon in 1975 and competed in the marathon in the 1976 Olympics as well as the Commonwealth Games. His best marathon time was 2-12-50 in 1978. Quite an athlete, and still going strong.
(The amount of information that Bill Smith put in his book on fell running is amazing!).

Agree Brian. Geof turned 70 recently and does amazingly well given the hammering his legs have taken over the years. I don't think he has any cartilage lft in his knees and last summer he tore his achilles at the end of a race trying to beat Anne Marie Jones (English V60 champ) last summer. I've had a few tussles with him but have the advantage of "youth" (a mere 68) and less wear and tear.

Jeff N has always finished a fair way in front of me (we are v. close in age) but there was one occasion where I bested him! It was the Gritstone Tryal a few yrs ago where my local knowledge (Gradbach area) worked to my advantage - but only for part of the race, he very soon overtook me and that was that as they say. As for the marathon, I'm afraid I wasn't available for the 1976 Olympics so couldn't give him some decent competition.
