Night time orienteering in November? Votes reqd

Postby Digby » Sun Oct 10, 2010 9:59 pm

I've reccied a fairly tough area for a potential 2h orienteering event in November and want to know what the appetite is for doing it on a Wednesday night (probably the 17th) .

The ground is on fairly high, heathery moorland. Nearly all the controls can be found by following "handrails" but some are quite a bit more tricky than others and will require accurate map and compass work. If this event goes ahead it would have to be done in pairs or threes on the grounds of safety.

An alternative might be to run the event at a w/e instead and I would have to do this anyway in the event of bad weather on the night.

So, what do folks want to do: Wednesday or weekend? Pl. cast your vote in the next 7 days. Thanks.

You have to be logged in Andy before you can "tick" the option as I've just done.
Disadvantage of w/e's is conflict with Fell races and X cntry. Day time is a big plus for those of us with visual impairments.

It should be the organisers choice really since they will have to put out & bring in the controls ( assuming you are using controls instead of answers to questions ).
I would personally prefer 1hr 30mins on a Wed night as it leaves more drinking time & getting home at a reasonable hour. With 2 hrs I predict some folk will run a long way from the start / finish & be back very late. I suggest we ask certain "Nil Points" recent participants at the Rab MM for their view.

My view as a distinguished orienteer is that it will be much more fun in the dark of a cold dank November evening rather than a easy peasy easy to find day time event. Much more fun.

I've voted for night time because I found them a real good wheeze earlier this year and it means that when you get lost its really a lot harder to get out of it.

We could even re-awaken the Tucker / Ardron dream team!

If its weekend won't be able to play, so will definitely be voting for evening. Kerry has also asked me to vote for evening for her as well, but not sure yet if can vote twice! If not, please add another one to the evening vote!!!!!

As the other member of the RAB super dream team I can only concur with everything Mr Tucker says - however I'm still a bit in the dark when it comes to finding check points.

I (reluctantly) agree with Tucks. Bring on the dark, cold, dank November evening to slow down the faster runners ...

Cast my vote for the Wednesday night.

Whilst my navigating is even worse than my running (and hence need the help of daylight), time at the weekends is at a premium, so Wednesdays have it for me.

Real Runners Do It in the Dark, well I think that's what is said. Wed night for me..
Looks like 50/50 split at t'mo but that depends on how the weekend night time voters voted..

Wednesday evening would be good for me.
Two hours makes it worth putting the shoes on, unless its raining!

Can't vote I'm afraid, not being given the option as I have before!? Obviously I have restricted access? Can someone help?
